Happy birthday to you, September One Baby! When I look to the universe to see what the future holds for you I see that you can find inspiration in the philosophy of your fellow birthdayer, the ever-stylish Shingai Shoniwa. Shingai’s heritage is part Zimbabwean, and the singer/model often finds her own strength in totems, the animal spirits that guide her tribe, saying, “You might have some of the mannerisms of that animal, its strengths, but you’ll also have its weaknesses. We believe a lot in the power of the animal.” This year I want you to also look around your environment and find your own kind of totem to draw strength from. Maybe your totem is, like Shingai’s, an animal, though that animal needn’t be anything exotic (I’m betting that even your pet goldfish has a measure of dignity you can add to your outlook). Or maybe your totem is another person, a mentor at work or someone you admire and aspire to be like. All that I ask is that you listen to me when I tell you to avoid making your totem a material possession, even though I know how much you like to shop on your birthday. Those Miu Miu ruched motorcycle boots are fabulous—really—but you don’t want to look for guidance in something that will be passé by Christmastime. Seek out strong qualities from the things around you, and I guarantee the year ahead will be one of confidence and success. —The Style Swami
