Giveaway! The Long (and Short) of It: The Madcap History of the Skirt

Yep, I am shamelessly promoting my book by giving it away for free! In 2007, Harpers published The Long (and Short) of It: The Madcap History of the Skirt, and I’d love to share it with readers of On This Day In Fashion. It’s basically a really cute pocket-sized tome of absolutely true stories about the world’s oldest garment, from the loincloth all the way up to the horrible low-rise micromini of 2005 (shudder). Well, there is one story in there about the embalmed hearts Queen Marguerite stored in the pockets of her hoop skirt, but you’ll have to read the book to find out whether that one is true or not. It also features fantastic illustrations by New York artist Leela Corman. Here’s a snippet from the description: Read More »

“Geoffrey Beene: A Design Tribute” Giveaway!

Especially for On This Day In Fashion readers, Geoffrey Beene collector Patsy Tarr generously donated a hardcover copy of her beautiful 2005 book, Geoffrey Beene: A Design Tribute, and we’re giving it away to one lucky reader here and on Twitter! Today is the last day to enter! You have to see this book to believe it. It not only features gorgeous photographs of more than 40 original Beene clothes and accessories, many modeled by Merce Cunningham Dance Company dancer Holley Farmer, but is designed as an amazing work of art in itself, with three photographic portfolios of accordion foldouts tucked into a smart and stylish case. Tarr and graphic designer Abbott Miller created and published the book shortly after Beene’s death as a testament to his vision of clothing as a form of communication that is inspired by art and dance. A coffee table gem! Go here to enter.
