Your Stylescope for July 17, 2010

Find out who in the fashion world shares a birthday with you and learn your destiny for the year. Guaranteed.

Born on July 17:
Sir Edwin Hardy Amies, English couturier; 1909
Jean Muir, English designer; 1928
Diahann Carroll, American actress, singer and style icon; 1935
Flavia de Oliveira, Brazilian model; 1983

July Seventeeners, I’m so pleased that today is your birthday! What does the universe have in store for you over the next 12 months? Well, I keep coming back to the designs of fellow birthdayer Jean Muir. Jean’s dresses were described as comfortable and effortless and “once donned, easily forgotten by the wearer but never the beholder.” This year, no matter where you go and the people you meet, I want you to be like a Jean Muir dress: utterly at ease and gaining notice. To get the attention you deserve, you’re going to need to be as comfortable at opening night at the opera as you are bellied up at a biker bar or on the pitching deck of a crabbing boat. Sure, inside your head there’s a voice screaming, “How did I get on a crabbing boat?” but on the outside I want you to radiate calm and a sense of belonging to any situation. Why? Because over the next 12 months, I think the outer serenity that others appreciate will turn into an inner tranquility that you will adore. In other words, you’re going to fall in love with yourself this year, and so is everyone else.

I didn’t do anything at the Queen, whom I admire.
