Born on June 9:
Max Raab, American clothier and filmmaker; 1926
Ossie Clark, British designer; 1942
Johnny Depp, American actor and style icon; 1963
Cameron Bunce, American model; 1981
Happy day to all June niners! Why, I ask you, would you be a one-trick pony, when you could be a multiple-trick pony? Like Max Raab, born in 1926, you have the unique ability to reinvent yourself. Max started off working for his father’s men’s clothing store, but soon turned his focus to women’s wear, and by the early 1960s The New York Times was calling him the “dean of the prep look.” Still unsatisfied, Max got involved with producing and directing movies (he was an executive producer on A Clockwork Orange). In the next year, I want you to take a page out of Max’s book and feel free to excel in more than one area. What if you’re not excelling in even one area yet? Well, then you’re going to have a very busy 12 months. Better get to it!

Born on June 8:
Carole Ann Ford, British actress and model; 1940
Trish Goff, American model; 1976
Irina Lazareanu, Romanian-Canadian model; 1982
Here we are again on your wonderful birthd8! This year, may I advise you to take what people say about you with a grain of salt, or depending on what they’re saying, the whole shaker. Need an example? Well, when speaking about your fellow birthday-er Irina Lazareanu, Michelle McCool, the fashion director at Cosmopolitan, remarked, “I love that she has no boobs.” Well, Michelle actually meant it in a good way and had other nice things to say about Irina, but my point is that the “no boob” thing could be misconstrued. So try to take people at their words. And yes, this means you’ll have to ignore the backhand in what might be a backhanded compliment. It might seem a little odd, especially considering the people you hang out with (I’m kidding. They’re not mean; they’re refreshingly bracing), but a return to innocence is going to make for an eye-opening year. Also, this is a good year to buy some new flatware.

BORN ON THIS DAY:
Azzedine Alaïa, Tunisian couturier; 1940
Happy Birthday, June 7! I know that you’ve always loved on your own schedule. Oh sure, your body might show up at the appointed time, but your mind is still at home, flossing. You share a lot with Azzedine Alaïa, who is famous for being on his own schedule. If an Alaïa design isn’t finished, it’s not finished. Well, I know this advice might go against your internal clock, but this year try adhering to somebody else’s schedule. This might mean “showing up” in spirit when showing up in reality, or becoming “the birthday person” at work. I know, it doesn’t necessarily sound like fun, but it’s going to be a valuable. Kind of like driving a friend to the airport at 5 a.m. in a snowstorm in a car with bald tires, the experience will be better when you’re finished. And, don’t worry, I promise that you can go back to your own schedule next year. Just realize that schedule might be a little more full because of the work you’re putting in this year.

People in fashion born on June 6:
David Rappaport, American fashion manufacturer and designer; 1914
Lady Bronwen Astor, model and Balmain muse; 1930
Malgosia Bela, Polish model and actress; 1977
Alana Zimmer, Canadian model; 1987
Ieva Laguna, Latvian model; 1990
R’el Dade, American model; 1990
Frida Gustavsson, Swedish model; 1993
A toast to your birthday and a year that’s going to be better than the last! Take inspiration from fellow birthdater, Lady Bronwen Astor, a model and muse for couturier Pierre Balmain, who called her one of the five most beautiful women he’d ever met. Bronwen was a supermodel of the 1950s and the queen of the Paris catwalks. But even at the height of her fame, Bronwen was being paid about $15 a week. I know you especially can understand this, having just spent a year when you were simultaneously celebrated and unrewarded. Well, that situation is going to improve, because in the next 12 months, you’re going to get your cake and eat it, too. Also that cake will be delicious, free and nutritionally valuable. Just a note, the aforementioned cake is only metaphorical and does not exist, but don’t let that stop you from getting what you deserve.

Born on June 5:
Salvatore Ferragamo, Italian shoe designer; 1898
Zuzu Angel, Brazilian-American fashion designer; 1921
Ellen Foley, American singer and style icon; 1951
Mark Wahlberg, American actor, rapper and model; 1971
HB, friendly! It would be so easy to say that just because you share a birthday with Salvatore Ferragamo, you have an unnatural fondness for shoes. Easy, but also absolutely correct. Do me a favor and look down at your feet. It’s time to replace those shoes. Get up this instant and go buy a pair in a style you’ve never worn before. If you’re not wearing shoes, paint your toenails in a new shade. If you’re currently getting a pedicure and admiring newly purchased shoes, go buy some funky flavor of yogurt. Do you see what I’m saying? To get things going this year, you need to jump start everything with one single change.
